EXPERIENCE AKOKO-NAN PARENTING EDUCATION & ENCOURAGEMENT GROUP

 WHO WE ARE

Our mission is to provide evidence-based family support services and parent education in a culturally sensitive and encouraging environment, helping families and communities become a source of positive energy and positive outcomes for children. We are a nonprofit child and family services agency specializing in parenting education. We believe in the power of family and in the support system of community. It does "take a village to raise a child”.

WHAT WE DO

Working Towards a Better Tomorrow

Given the current challenges facing children in a culture of social media, streaming entertainment, unlimited information and instant gratification, communities must assume more responsibility over the environment’s influence of our children. For this reason, here at Akoko-Nan we utilize trained members from the community as facilitators. Parents certified through the Akoko-Nan program have become peer facilitators.
Over a series of 16 teaching sessions , we discuss the responsibility to parent effectively in major areas affecting the lives of children. By sharing their own personal experiences, peer facilitators serve as models for the participants in the program,  helping parents develop the  confidence to  try new parenting techniques. Parents are encouraged to embrace change and seek self-improvement as  priorities  in order to minimize dysfunction in their own households.

ADMINISTRATORS

Committed to the Cause

Not only do facilitators train parents in parenting techniques but also assist, guide and encourage parents as they navigate the Children’s Court, Criminal Court and Family Law Court systems. Peer facilitators have stories of success, as well as struggles and failures and readily share their experiences with participants in the program. Peer facilitators help parents feel confident about outcomes when they are consistent with their efforts to make self-change and change in their household.
